Gold is a relatively malleable metal, so it's important to look after your gold jewellery, both whilst wearing it and when storing it. We recommend to remove your jewellery when showering, soaking, sleeping, cleaning, exercising or doing anything very 'hands on'. Put your jewellery on last when getting dressed - after any perfume and products. When you're not wearing your gold pieces, store them carefully and ensure they're not touching other pieces.

White gold jewellery is naturally a champagne colour and has a rhodium coating which creates its bright white shine. Exposing your jewellery to chemicals such as perfumes and hairsprays can remove this plating. You can visit us in-store for help with re-rhodium coating your white gold jewellery.

Yellow gold jewellery can tarnish too; you will notice a slight discoloration which makes your jewellery appear darker. You can restore its natural lustre by following our cleaning tips above and on our care guide.

Salt water and chlorine can damage your gold and gold-plated jewellery. For white gold or gold-plated jewellery, we would recommend not getting these wet as it can remove the layer of plating.

When it comes to buying gold jewellery, it’s important you buy from an authorised retailer that complies with the UK legislation, Responsible Jewellery Council, the Kimberley Process and No Dirty Gold Campaign - the jewellery should also be hallmarked. For solid gold jewellery, a hallmark will tell you if it’s certified and the purity of the gold; 9ct and 18ct are the most popular purities for jewellery. It’s important to remember that gold-plated or gold vermeil jewellery are not solid gold, meaning the gold colouring will wear off overtime.

Gold in its purest form, otherwise known as 24ct gold, is hypoallergenic but it’s too soft to be worn as jewellery. Therefore, it’s alloyed with other metals to increase its strength.

One of the most common alloys is nickel, however this can be an issue for people with nickel allergies. If you are allergic to nickel, then it is better to choose gold jewellery with a higher percentage of gold content, for example 18ct gold.
